Simple Things

Dear Elli,

Sometimes I forget how awesome the simple things in life can be.  I really need to start remembering more often.

We went to a drive-in movie tonight.  I haven't been to a drive-in movie theater in over a decade.  It was your first time.

We went to Magic City Drive-In.  That's the same place my mom took me when I was your age.  The place hasn't changed a single thing since back then.  They still have the same swing set.  The same sliding board.  The same dusty gravel parking lot.

When you ran off to play with all of the other kids, I remembered doing the same thing.  At the same place.  Twenty seven years ago.  It was actually kind of surreal, in a really cool kind of way.

Sometimes I get wrapped up in all of the grand things I want to do with you.  Vacations.  Adventures.  You know, expensive shit.  I do that, I think, because those are the kinds of things that I never got to do when I was a kid.  And I think we all want to do things for our kids that we could never do.

But you know what?  I sometimes forget that my childhood was pretty freaking grand, too.  Playing in the dirt at the drive-in was a hell of a lot of fun.  And so was watching a movie in the middle of the night.  Under the stars shining bright over Barberton, Ohio.

You had a blast tonight.  And so did I.  Thank you for helping me remember that $18 spent at the drive-in is actually priceless.

I love you.

Mom
